Jan. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide said he'll call legislative elections within six months as opposition leaders call for his resignation.
Aristide said he plans to set a date for elections after negotiating with opposition leaders.
``I believe in dialogue; I believe in the respect of the people's rights,'' Aristide said at a news conference at the Summit of the Americas in Monterrey, Mexico. ``If someone doesn't agree with me, it's good that they express it.''
Aristide downplayed protest by thousands of students against his administration, saying many of them were ``false students.''
He called on international observers to be present during elections to help ensure democracy continues in a nation that has suffered 32 violent overthrows of the government in its 200-year history.
